hearingfromGodI love the opportunity to review good books, and jumped at the chance to review Joyce Meyer’s “hearing from GOD each morning – 365 Daily Devotions” when I saw it!  I’ve been looking for a good daily devotional for some time, and thought I might find it here.

I’ve seen some daily devotionals that barely brush the Word of God, and then I’ve seen daily devotionals that require a good 30 minutes to digest and apply.  I’ve been looking for something in between – something that could take me deeper in my walk with the Lord even if I only have 5 minutes!  As I began flipping through the pages of this purse-sized book, I stopped at the reading for March 29.

The verse for the date is 1 Chronicles 16:34 O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever! (Amp).

The first line reads: “Thanksgiving should be a regular part of our lives.”  Just having breezed through the holidays – this statement really rang with me.  And as I read the devotion, it was thought-provoking and gave me something to chew on.

Each devotion concludes with “God’s Word for you today” which might be a nugget of inspiration, a moment of encouragement, or a good challenge.  March 29 challenges you to “Thank God for twenty things today before you ask Him for anything.”  That made me stop and think – would it take me long to come up with 20 different things to be thankful for?  And how often do I THANK God sincerely for my blessings before I rattle off my ever growing wish list of hopes and dreams?

While I wouldn’t use this devotional for deep, serious study of God’s Word, it appears to be just the kind of thing I need to jumpstart my morning Quiet Time with God.  With the unpredictable waking times of my girls, I need something that is easy to handle while providing me with more than just a sugar coated “Have a Nice Day” attitude.  I really like this little book – both for its actual size (5×7) and the serious content within.

This is what the publisher’s website says:

In the hustle and bustle of today’s busy world, sometimes it’s hard enough to hear yourself think, much less take a minute to stop and listen for the voice of God. But learning to recognize God’s voice and the many ways in which He speaks is vital for following His plan. This devotional; drawing from How to Hear From God, Knowing God Intimately, and The Power Of Simple Prayer shows the reader through a daily reminder, how God speaks through their own thoughts and feelings, their dreams, and the words of other people. Joyce Meyer reveals the ways in which God delivers His word and the benefits of asking God for the sensitivity to hear His voice. Joyce asks the question, “Are you listening?” and shares how to do just that…on a daily basis.

I can so relate to the hustle and bustle of today’s busy world, can’t you?  This will be a terrific tool to be used every day to get in touch with the Lord and go deeper with Him!
