Vision Quest 2010

By CoffeeMom | December 29, 2009

Did you ever see the 80’s movie, Vision Quest? It’s about a high school wrestler – not typically my kind of movie – except for the fact that parts of the movie were actually filmed in my high school’s gymnasium.

What is a Vision Quest? Well, it’s actually a rite of passage stemming from Native American culture. A pre-adolescent experiences a challenging journey through a wilderness, often while fasting, in order to discover his/her life’s direction and meaning.

While I’m not suggesting anyone attempt a vision quest, a personal, spiritual journey is often considered as one year ends and a new one begins. Some people seek this journey through a means of “Resolutions”; I prefer to call them “Goals.”

Do you have Goals for 2010?

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions only to find they’ve fallen by the wayside before Valentines Day? I know I struggle with that. The truth is – most of my goals have been so self-centered, so self-focused that they were doomed to failure because they were based on ME. Based on my wants, desires, and dreams – with little thought as to what GOD had planned for me.

Can you relate?

It’s important to set goals – have a vision – even the Bible speaks to this:

Where there is no vision, the people perish… (Prov 29:18 KJV).

The truth is – I am still learning to set goals and make plans – and do it with prayer and surrender to what God has planned for me. He does give us dreams and desires – he gives us gifts and abilities – and yet it is critical to ask Him to guide our plans and goals before we try to etch them into stone.

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths. (Proverbs 3:5, 6 Amp)

I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve been praying over – considering – planning – surrendering to the Lord! And I welcome you to join me on my own Vision Quest.

  • Blogging. I just told my mom the other day that I had an afternoon of Blogging Brainstorming and came up with just about 2 months worth of topics for both The Queen Mommys Cafe and Mommies Coffee Break. I don’t normally get to even think that far ahead, and I’m already praying about the direction God is taking me. I have a desire to dig deeper into life – into God – into marriage & motherhood – and know it’s likely to be evident in my blogging. We’ll have a few more changes here – just to freshen things up – and I hope to have much more to offer to you in 2010!
  • Writing. While blogging is essentially, writing, I am praying about honing my writing skills and would like to get one E-book completed in 2010, as well as some other ventures. This is on the altar because it is both a burning drive within me and a challenge of discipline. I’m feeling a calling to write about some things specifically – and I want to do so with wisdom, honesty, and grace.
  • Conferences. There is one particular conference I would like to physically attend this year: Relevant. It is still being put together, but since my bloggy friend, SarahMae is involved, it’s something I’ve already started praying over. It’s for Christian women bloggers – and I want to be there! There are also a couple of online conferences at A Woman Inspired that I would like to attend too: Nurturing Creativity/Efficient Living, “One” Marriage, and maybe Step Out into Ministry. These online conferences are so great. Not only inspirational – but practical and helpful – and the convenience of the online format means I can be in my comfy clothes and still participate fully. If I miss a session, mp3s will be available later. GOOD STUFF!!!

Keeping priorities is the biggest challenge, of course.

Marriage – Motherhood – Home – Ministry – School… and it really requires a daily walk with the Lord. I have appreciated some great Quiet Time with Him lately and will share more about that tomorrow at The Queen Mommys Cafe.

In the meantime, please feel free to share your goals or plans – your Vision Quest – for 2010 in the comments below. I’d love to know where your vision may take you!
