Treats for Mom and Dad!

By CoffeeMom | October 30, 2009

The holidays are right around the corner, and while shopping and gift-giving often take center stage, many people are looking for great gift ideas without spending a lot of money.

Here are a few suggestions for homemade gift ideas:

Microwave Heating Bags

I don’t know anybody that doesn’t have some kind of ache or pain at least every once in awhile.

One of my favorite ways to “treat” these aches and pains is with the homemade microwaveable Rice or Corn bags.  You just microwave for a couple of minutes and place it on your achy spots, and voila!  Relief!

Tipnut has a GREAT explanation of how to make one of your own Microwave Heating Bags.

Even if you  don’t use them for aches and pains, they’re also great to warm up cold toes or hands, too – and they make really thoughtful gifts!

Reed Diffusers

Sometimes adding a fresh scent to your house comes along with a smell so powerful you want to pass out!  From plugins to candles to all sorts of products – you can spend a lot of money just trying to keep your house smelling fresh and clean.

Reed diffusers are one of my favorite ways to freshen our home.  I can place one high on a shelf – it’s barely noticeable – can’t be unplugged or start a fire – and offers a long-lasting scent without much thought.  They aren’t exactly cheap, though, so Tipnut also offers suggestions for how to make your own Reed Diffusers.  You can customize the scents to your own preferences using natural ingredients, and save a lot of money in the process!

Homemade Drink Mixes

As the weather turns colder, it’s  time for hot cocoa, hot tea, coffee and cider!  The variety of offerings in grocery stores and cafes these days is really amazing – and they’re always sooooo delicious! =)

But spending money every day on coffee or cider is not always an option.  Here are some homemade alternatives to satisfy your cravings while saving you money – and when bagged up and tucked into tins or baskets – they make terrific gifts for holidays or special occasions!

Moms Hot Cocoa Mix – you can add marshmallows to treat the kid in you!

Cozy Coffee Mix – a satisfying coffee treat at home!

Spiced Tea Mix – this will really warm you up!

Chocolate Chai – not a mix, but a great treat to share with company!

These mixes are great to keep on hand to share with friends and family, or to enjoy in a quiet moment amidst the rush of the holidays!

I made individual hot cocoa for gifts last year. I put one package of hot cocoa into a baby jar and then added little marshmallows to the top. I picked out Christmas fabric and cut it into big enough circles to cover the lids.I tied a ribbon around them and hot glued a candy cane on to use as a stir stick! It was fun and simple. You could always buy two mugs, make two individual hot cocoas, and put them in a bag or basket with a movie as a couples gift! Good luck with your shopping this year!
