Bilingual Toddlers
By Mommy1 | February 28, 2008
It is so funny. The other day my husband was home and he started hollering “Dianna, can you come here please.” So I casually walk back to him and he asks “Do you understand what Boo is saying”. I asked my almost 3 year old to repeat what she said to her daddy and she did. I just busted out laughing. Hubby says “am I wrong or is she speaking spanish?”. I answer him that of course she is. LOL He just laughs and laughs. You have to understand that we are your average Americans. Born and bred here and our families can be traced back to immigrants that came over from way back when our country was very young so for one of our children speaking spanish, especially the youngest one is an absolute shock to my hubby.
Where do you think she learned this? Where else Dora the Explorer. She will run around the house speaking different words in spanish some that I know most that I don’t. Well, recently Nick Jr started showing a new show called Ni Hao Kai Lan, please forgive my spelling if I have misspelled this. This is a show very similar to Dora the Explorer only it features a Chinese girl and she teaches children to speak Chinese which I understand is actually Mandarin if I remember correctly. So now not only am I going to have to learn Spanish so I can no what my toddler is saying I am now going to have to learn Chinese (Mandarin).
I think being bilingual is a great thing but it would be even better if the parents could understand their children when they are speaking it. ROFL!!!!
Hope you enjoyed that little story.

I love that!!! Thank you for sharing this story. When I read the first part, all I could think was… I wonder if her kids watch Dora???? ROFL. Mine are very interested in Spanish from watching Dora and Diego and when I was out shopping a while back and saw a spanish picture dictionary for kids, I had to pick it up!!!! They love it! I think it is wonderful that kids can pick up other languages so easily! What a cool thing!
