Coffee Chats and a Cup of Faith for Mommies

Like…Like…Like…

What is it with the word “like?” What do I mean? I am sure everyone who reads this blog has heard the following or something VERY similar at some point…for me quite frequently!

Jane: “Like, what are you going to the game tonight?”

Kate: “No, like my parents grounded me.”

Jane: “That’s like so wrong!”

Kate: “I know! Like this was THE game of the season.”

When I was a kid, we used the word “like,” to express how we felt about someone…LOL. I mean, I KNOW it can be used in other forms…but…like…um…like geez dude! ROFL!

The funny thing is, it’s NOT just teenagers that do this. I was watching Survivor over the weekend, and Pei Gei and Amanda had a five minute conversation with like a gazillion like likes! It drives me insane…do we not KNOW any PROPER adjectives? Can we not think before we open our mouths? MUST we use the word like CONSTANTLY???

OK, like what do all of you like think? I mean like, I would love to like chat about this.

Like, I KNOW!!!! It drives me batty, but I have to say that I am definitely guilty of it too on occasion…OK, maybe a few occasions…

What I want to know is when it started. Not to date myself, but it seems like (used in the correct context) it started with the whole Moon Zappa – Valley Girl thing of the early 80′s. “Like, OMG!” We sort of lost the sing-songy voice, and don’t say “Like, gag me with a spoon!”, but the “like” never seemed to go away. Am I right? Was that the origin?

This like drives me bonkers! I cannot stand it! My nine year old recently started doing this and I have to stop her a gazillion times each day! I think it should be outlawed!
