Coffee Chats and a Cup of Faith for Mommies

Oh My _____ …

My daughter posed a intriguing question to me the other night. At first, I thought I knew the answer, but then I thought…hmmm….this is a thought provoking question…

She asked me if it was wrong to say. “Oh, my God; Geez; Gosh, Jesus, etc.” Before I could answer…and this is why I was stumped…she reminded me of what the the Bible says. The fourth commandment tells us not to take the Lord’s Name in vain and that Geez and Gosh are variations/slang for God.

This question came up because we were at a pool party and another child said “Oh my God” in front of the host’s little girl. And the host’s little girl responded, “That’s a bad word in our house, can you not use it.” My daughter over heard this and it was not the first time she heard this type of discussion. AND, her Bible teacher says that even “Gosh and Geez” are taking His Name in vain.

So, she is challenging me to know the meaning of what God was saying! LOL! I know that God loves us and He is certainly not sitting up there with a tally sheet. LOL! However, I DO want to honor His Word and KNOW what He is saying. So, I am going to do a study of the verse and post it here…BUT…I wanted to get your thoughts as well…

Thought Provoking Discussion Questions:

What are your rules? Where do YOU draw the line? Do you have a thought as to WHAT “taking the Lord’s Name in vain” means? DO you think “God D***” is the only time it is used in vain? Do you think “Gosh and Geez” takes it too far?

Talk to me Mommies…

You know this is a really good question. It is definitly one to make you think. In our house I tell my children to say “oh my goodness” instead. Only because gosh is so close to God that it could easily be misheard. I never thought about saying geez though.

What I really hate is to hear a minister who is preaching say “My Gd!”, as an exclamation. It just makes me cringe. There seems to be alot of that going on these days.

. . . but my communication isn’t always what it should be either.
